On a late afternoon in early February, Salvatore Scaduto visited his mistress Sophia. It had been several weeks since they had spent any time together and he missed her—she always smelled of sandalwood and welcomed him wearing something serious and studious, yet sexy—but he missed his dog, Zeno, more. The summer before, his wife Nella claimed she’d developed a sudden allergy to Zeno and insisted he get rid of him. For the entire season she had dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief or exaggeratedly blown her nose whenever the hound came near. At first, Salvatore believed it was the acacia trees blooming in their neighborhood. Eventually, though, he felt certain that Nella was simply punishing him. She had wanted to spend the entire summer in Argentario, but he had promised their house to a business associate for the week of Ferragosto and she was furious. He had mended the situation by booking a trip to Zanzibar for the following winter, but she was relentless in her persecution of the dog. Salvatore simply could not bring himself to give up Zeno—he loved him and he loved having an excuse to go out on long after-dinner walks, leaving his wife and daughters behind—but the discussion had grown heated and exasperating and, finally, intolerable.

“I adore dogs,” Sophia had explained. And she would happily have taken Zeno, but only small dogs were allowed in the apartment she rented.

Salvatore had had mixed feelings about giving his dog to a mistress. It would surely complicate things. But whenever he looked at Zeno he could not imagine to whom else he might entrust him, or worse, never seeing him again. And so it happened that Sophia became Zeno’s caretaker and the large dog lived with her in her tiny attic flat near the botanic garden in Trastevere. Of course, Salvatore had supplied her with the apartment. But he didn’t mind. He had brought his lovers there for years, having bought it at auction for a song. Some day he would reclaim it for one of his daughters, but until then, if it meant Zeno was well cared for, Sophia could have it. And he liked the idea of “keeping” her. It would have been crass to charge her rent, but it excited him to think she would always feel indebted to him. Actually, she had made great improvements to the place since she arrived, and she took excellent care of his Zeno. Not to mention his cock.

He had never asked Sophia why she had no family of her own. He only knew she was a professor of some sort and spoke several languages. Her Italian was fluent, but her accent instantly marked her as foreign. She had explained it to him once, her complicated lineage, but he’d since forgotten. What interested him was the pale softness of her white skin, her full lips. He had never had a better blowjob in his life. For Salvatore, Sophia was a revelation. He’d slept with plenty women, but none quite like her.
